Zinkwazi Beach
Zinkwazi Beach is a quiet coastal village on the north coast of KwaZulu Natal where the warm Indian Ocean washes pristine beaches fringed with indigenous bush. The village is surrounded by fields of waving sugar cane – the crop locally grown here. The distance to Ballito with great amenities is 30km while to King Shaka international airport it’s a mere 45km south on the highway.
Tucked into a bay at the main swimming beach lies the picturesque Zinkwazi river lagoon – home of the Fish Eagle from which it derives its name. The placid river is a source of enjoyment for all ages – swimming, canoeing, birding and fishing. The length of beach between the river and the surf is popular and a most convenient spot close to river, surf and tidal rock pools. At low tide these clear pools with a variety of sea creatures and shells are a source of great enjoyment to children.
There are two food outlets at the beach Proud’s Pizza hut in the main car park, where delicious pizza can be ordered and delivered to you on the sand. Mahogany Reef, the Ski boat club house is on the sand and from its wooden deck budget food and drinks are served. In holiday season the Ski Boat club arrange a band and dancing on the deck and beach is very popular.
Another shady spot for tea or a light meal is the Zinkwazi Cafe on the corner of Nkwazi and Glen drive. The little café is well stocked with essential items and serves excellent teas and simple meals under lacy trees on a wooden deck.
A wealth of indigenous trees and shrubs cluster around homes in the village and provide food and shelter for a variety of creatures. Early morning hikers report sightings of blue duiker and Mongoose in the understory bush of vacant properties while at night the Natal Bush baby can be heard as well as the occasional owl. Bush big and porcupine are nocturnal and endemic to the area.
While summers can be very hot, our winters are short and mild. Swimming in the ocean is popular all year round. Life guards are in attendance daily at the main beach.
